Our Birthday Gift to You What are Cataracts? Cataracts are common eye condition where the lens in the eye, which is usually a transparent structure, thickens and becomes cloudy. It is most commonly associated with increasing age but can be exacerbated by certain medications, diabetes, trauma, as well as be congenital (from birth). The risk of Cataracts are also dramatically increased by prolonged UV exposure, which is why wearing the correct UV protection, not just on sunny days is so crucial. If you would like to discuss the different options for UV protection, including photochromic, polarised, or tinted lenses please give us a call on 0191 284 7361. There are several types of cataracts, each causing slightly different symptoms, which usually appear gradually. The most common symptoms are: • Blurred or hazy vision • Colours not so distinctive • Sensitivity to glare • Change in prescription, resulting in new spectacles being required • Poor night vision • A ‘halo’ effect round lights HOWARE CATARACTS TREATED? The treatment for cataracts is surgery. It is a short procedure, normally only taking about 15-20 minutes, in which the natural lens of the eye is replaced with a plastic intra ocular lens implant (IOL). The implant that is used can change the prescription that is in the patient’s glasses, so it is important that patients know what to expect before going ahead. NHS OR PRIVATE? The NHS usually covers the cost of the procedure and a type of implant that allows clear vision at one distance, called mono-focal.With this option you will still need to wear glasses post operatively, usually for reading or if you prefer, varifocals for convenience. If you would like a multifocal lens which would allow clear vision at most distances without the need for glasses this can be done as a private procedure. When considering surgery, it is important that you are aware of the benefits and potential risks involved so you can make an informed decision on what is the best option for you. Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure and recovery time is usually minimal. Please ask our optometrist Karen if you have any concerns or would like any more information.
