Our day started off as any good day should, with a croissant and a coffee (or a tea for Caroline and Karen)! Just a short walk from our hotel across West London led us to the Tom Davies factory. For us, it was like walking intoWillyWonka’s chocolate factory, we could hardly contain our excitement. From the acetate kitchen where you could select the beads to make up your own unique pattern, to the machinery used to hand craft every frame, the whole manufacturing process was a joy to follow. Early in Tom’s design career he relocated to Hong Kong. It was there that he found a passion for eyewear and discovered how life-changing a good design could be. In 2002, sick of the standard designs,Tom founded his company. 15 years later, in 2017,Tom opened his London factory. Bringing production to the UK was a long-held dream which allowed him to introduce an apprentice scheme passing on the unique skills and craftsmanship of producing handmade frames onto the next generation. Toms approach has revolutionised the manufacturing process, many of the machines in the factory he has built himself! The process from start to finish is fascinating, looking in Tom’s sketch pad was like having an insight into his brain. Seeing his sketches from scribbles in pages to a quality frame and all the meticulous steps in between was amazing. This unique and personalised service is clearly demonstrated in the quality of the end product. Visiting the factory has given us a valuable insight into the intricacies involved in creating the perfect pair of Tom Davies spectacles.
